ITV The Chase Welsh contestant fails to beat chaser after 'enjoying himself too much'

A Welsh contestant who appeared on ITV's The Chase on Thursday, December 1 lost his spot in the first round of the general knowledge quiz show as a result of him "enjoying himself too much".

The show sees four contestants who have never met before team up against a general knowledge genius known as The Chaser in a bid to win thousands. Hosted by actor and presenter Bradley Walsh, the six 'chasers' on the show are made up of Mark 'The Beast' Labbett, Shaun 'The Dark Destroyer' Wallace, Jenny 'The Vixen' Ryan, Paul 'The Sinnerman' Sinha, Darragh 'The Menace' Ennis and Issa 'The Supernerd' Schultz.

Nathan, a church engagement and fundraising officer for a development charity - who described his job simply as: "I help people to help others" - and avid walker and writer from Llanelli, did well in the first set of questions from Bradley and built up a whopping £7000.

His opposition then greeted him after this triumph and said: "Hello Nathan, you're clearly a fan of the three w's - walking, writing and wow that was a good cash builder, well played." However, when taking part in the show against chaser Paul Sinha in the second part of the first round it seems he lost his sharpness and was knocked out.

It came after he supposedly didn't give "that last bit of extra thought" in the final two questions. The first read 'What became Scotland's seventh city in 2012?' The multiple choice answers were Fort William, Motherwell and Perth. Answering Fort William, an unsure Nathan said: "I would have thought Perth would have been old. I'm not 100%, again...". The correct answer was in fact Perth - which the chaser got.

He said: "I think the fact that you thought it was a city instinctively should have been your clue there. Fort William and Motherwell have never even applied for city status let alone got anywhere near being [classed as a] city".

The second was: 'The term 'thraldom' refers to being in someone's what?' Way, Power and Dreams were the options, the latter of which Nathan went for, which he justified as: "Enthralled by...", although doubted himself and added: "It could be Power as well."

Paul, the chaser, got 'Power' right and mused: "Again, your logic was right and your answer was wrong. Because if you enthrall someone you will do anything they say. Basically you admire them so you do things for them."

At this incorrect answer, Nathan was eliminated from the game. After saying farewell to the Llanelli boy - who praised host Bradley on his pronounciation of his town name at the start of his round, to which Bradley said in a strong accent: "Oh, brilliant look Butt" - the chaser explained why he thought Nathan, who started so strongly, lost points at the last minute.

The 52-year-old genius told Bradley: "Nathan's a really good player, what happened is he was enjoying himself so much that he wasn't quite giving the questions that last bit of extra thought, so I think he should have got the Scottish city one and I feel that he shoud have got that after working out the word enthrall...it's someone you do anything for."

The Chase airs weekdays on ITV1 at 5pm.
