ITV The Chase viewers spot contestant from a different TV show

Eagle-eyed viewers watching The Chase recognised a contestant on today's instalment from a rival TV show.

James, a Cambridge PhD student, was hoping to win his fair share of the cash prize as he took on The Chaser.

But viewers were sure they'd seen James elsewhere, especially after he mentioned being a regular on the Cambridge quiz circuit.

Host Bradley Walsh was none the wiser as he joked:  "You know when you're doing the pub quizzes in Cambridge, are you the one at the bar getting in all the pints?", after James scored just £4k in the Cash Builder.

Bradley then asked James: "Who do you want to face on The Chase?"

James replied saying: "I'd like to take on The Beast as he was a University Challenge captain."

Bradley was shocked at James' admission (ITV)

Bradley, shocked, said: "Have you been on University Challenge with Jeremy Paxo?", to which James admitted his affiliation with the BBC show.

However, after meeting Jenny Ryan, she revealed: "I thought I'd recognised your face, but not only did you go on University Challenge, you lifted the trophy."

Impressed by his previous skills, The Vixen offered James the higher offer of £24k in the Head-to-Head, which he took.

Jenny said: "I watched your performance on University Challenge and I know you're a very good quizzer."

Jenny knew all about James too (ITV)

But viewers at home were quicker than Brad and Jenny to recognise James.

One wrote: "It's James Devine-Stoneman of University Challenge fame."

Another said: "I'm sure I've seen James on another quiz."

And Dayjur tweeted: "Fairly sure this guy's been on University Challenge."

It appeared that James had acquired top skills and quizzing knowledge during his time on University Challenge as he stormed through to the final round with £24k.
