ITV The Chase viewers shocked as contestant breaks rule of the show

A contestant on The Chase had a lucky escape after breaking one of the show's rules.

Shirley from London had a nervous wait as she watched her fellow contestants get knocked out by The Chaser.

With only one player left on her team, it was important for Shirley to secure a good amount of cash.

The 79-year-old breezed through the cash-builder round as she scored £5,000.

But viewers couldn't believe what she did in the head-to-head.

Facing The Beast, Shirley had fighting talk after Mark insulted her performance, saying: "How dare you!"

But it appears the pressure became too much as she broke a rule during the first question.

Shirley and The Beast were asked: "A kilderkin is a measurement of what?"

But instead of pressing the button, Shirley shouted out 'capacity' - giving Mark the correct answer.

Viewers were stunned and many took to Twitter at what had just happened.

Kelsey said: "My stress level is through the roof watching Shirley #TheChase ."

Lindy Loo wrote: "Has she watched the show bless her??"

Nathan tweeted: "Hahaha the poor thing saying the answer out loud. Do you not watch the show love??"

And Jacquie said: "Did...did she just try to say the answer?"

Promptly, Bradley explained the rules of the show to Shirley, telling her that in this round she needs to press a button.

The Beast said: "Well that's not the way I want to win."
