ITV The Chase's Mark 'The Beast' Labbett lifts the lid on the show's cash prize secrets

The Chase star Mark Labbett has lifted the lid on the secret behind how the show’s cash prizes are decided.

The differing amounts of money offered to contestants on the ITV quiz programme as they battle against the Chaser in the head-to-head round - and how that total is decided - have always been a bit of a mystery to viewers.

It is suggested on the programme that it is the Chaser who picks the amounts, which are much higher number if they decide to opt for a harder position on the board.

Those who pick the easy way home are offered a much lower figure - and sometimes even a minus amount.

But the Mirror Online reports that Labbett, aka The Beast, let fans into the secret after a fan posed the question on Twitter.

They asked: "Do you make offers based on how the contestant does in the cash builder or are the offers already set out?"

Mark replied directly to the question, admitting that it's all down to ITV to decide the money offer.

He said: “No idea, we get handed them on a sheet of paper. Not our money.”

Mark recently appeared on spin off show Beat The Chasers, which saw all the show’s brainiacs come together for the first time.

Mark was joined by Anne ‘The Governess' Hegerty, Jenny ‘The Vixen’ Ryan, Shaun ‘The Dark Destroyer’ Wallace and Paul ‘The Sinnerman’ Sinha for the all-star line up, along with host Bradley Walsh.

Unlike the regular series, where one Chaser appears to compete with a team, Bradders invites a single quizzer to take on two, three, four or all five Chasers.

The series proved a success for ITV, and fans are now hoping it will come back for a second series.

The Chase airs weekdays from 5pm on ITV.
