Anne Hegerty stunned The Chase fans as she aimed a "brutal" dig at a quizzer on today's show.

The Governess took on four new contestants on Monday's edition of the popular ITV gameshow.

Bradley Walsh welcomed Christian, Yasmin, Emily and Kevin - who were testing their wits against one of the UK's finest quiz brains in a bid to win a cash prize.

Christian and Yasmin started off in strong form as they successfully navigated their way past Anne to earn their place in the Final Chase.

Up in seat 3 was Emily, who was a chemistry teache r from Stoke on Trent.

The 27-year-old built up £2,000 in her cash-builder and was mortified when she got a chemistry question incorrect during her show.

However, Emily managed to recover and defeated Anne in the head-to-head after a series of successful guesses.

Anne aimed a dig as the quizzer was making her way back to the team.

She said: "She's an extra step in the Final Chase. I don't know how much use she's going to be otherwise, but she's an extra step."

Bradley stepped in to respond: "Take no notice of her Emily, it's all good."

Emily responded with an "ouch" - as viewers of the show on Twitter reacted to the "brutal" exchange.

John said: "Brutal from Anne. Still smarting from the diss fluke answer."

Brian added: "Anne putting the boot in."

Jason commented: "Harsh but true from Anne on."

A viewer posted : " Ooooo Anne with the shade."

Andrea tweeted: "Damn, Anne threw a whole forest of shade just then."

Anne caught Kevin in seat 4 which left the three players competing for an overall £16,000.

The players built up an impressive 20 steps, but The Governess put in a formidable performance to catch them with 5 seconds remaining - meaning they left empty-handed.

*The Chase is on ITV on weekdays at 5pm
