ITV The Chase Celebrity viewers in shock over Ann Widdecombe's choice of charity

Viewers of the popular celebrity spinoff of ITV's The Chase were left in shock after ex-Tory politician Ann Widdecombe chose a donkey sanctuary in Israel to donate her share of the £100,000 winnings.

The four contestants - Jimmy Carr, Ann Widdecombe, and TV presenting duo Sam Nixon and Mark Rhodes - triumphed in their battle with Chaser Jenny Ryan, who sported a new beehive hairdo for tonight's edition.

But when it came to the charities chosen by the team to receive £25,000, there was plenty of comment on social media for Widdecombe's choice - Safe Haven for Donkeys in the Holy Land.

Twitter user Molly C Stevenson said: "I've never been more furious at a choice of charity. Absolute bloody joke."

And Tony Cleugh said: "Ann Widdecombe wins £25k on the #TheChase and she gives it to a Donkey Sanctuary in the Holyland!"

And Twitter user SportsnStuff said: "Ann Widdecombe just gave 25k to a donkey charity on The Chase. Cancer? Sick children ? War relief ? No, donkeys."

But others defended her choice, with one saying: "Donkeys need love like everything does."

There was also surprise that one of the contestants, Sam Nixon, had never heard of a Pez dispenser for sweets - even though he works in childrens' TV.
