Whispers of a major shake-up at Good Morning Britain are causing serious tension behind the scenes at ITV, with staff reportedly fearing a full-on “mutiny” over proposed changes to the long-running breakfast show.
The popular morning programme, which has been a fixture on screens since 2014 with familiar faces like Susanna Reid, Richard Madeley, and Kate Garraway, could be set for a complete transformation. Rumour has it that ITV bosses are eyeing up a slicker, more hard-hitting look—something more in line with the tone of ITV’s main news bulletins, which are produced by ITN.
There’s talk of the show moving into a brand-new studio at ITV’s Television Centre in London, and it’s not just about fresh paint and new graphics. This could signal a deeper, structural shift that’s got production teams on edge. The worry? That a revamp might come at the cost of people’s jobs.
One insider told the Daily Mail: “Obviously, any talk of major change starts panic – lots of the staff were immediately worried about the security of their jobs. This is about streamlining ITV’s news output across the whole day, and having separate teams doubling up just doesn’t make sense.”
The idea is to create a more seamless feel across ITV’s news programming—from breakfast right through to evening bulletins. That might mean some correspondents no longer working exclusively on Good Morning Britain, but popping up across multiple slots instead. “There could be a new set and a new feel,” the source added. “But people are very much likely to lose their jobs, so there is a lot of upset, anger and in some cases, mutiny.”
All of this comes after Andrew Dagnell, former ITV News boss, was appointed as ITV’s director of news and current affairs. His arrival appears to have set the wheels of change in motion, and unions have reportedly flagged their “concerns” in a memo to staff. ITV hasn’t commented on the speculation yet, but something big might be brewing.
Good Morning Britain has had its fair share of big moments over the years, not least when Piers Morgan joined the show back in 2015. Love him or loathe him, he helped the show hit record ratings before his dramatic exit in 2021, following his controversial comments about Meghan Markle. Since then, Piers has had a rocky run with new ventures, including the short-lived TalkTV gig, although he’s found a new audience with his YouTube show.
