ITV show Beat the Chasers set to feature Nottingham contestant

An economics student in Nottingham will appear on the ITV game show Beat the Chasers tonight in an attempt to win cash which he would use to fund meningitis research.

Muhammad Ali, a 21-year-old student at the University of Nottingham, will be a contestant on the TV game show, which is a spin-off of The Chase on Thursday, January 7.

The student, originally from Birmingham, will compete to win a cash prize and has said any winnings will go towards his fundraising for the Meningitis Research Foundation.

Muhammad is one of thirty students at the University of Nottingham who will trek to Everest Base Camp this summer, with the target of raising £90,000 for the charity.

Speaking ahead of appearing on the show, Muhammad said: "This will actually be my second TV appearance. I was on Mastermind in 2019 but didn't do that well back then. I felt more confident this time.

"I always saw taking part in the show as an opportunity to continue fundraising for the Meningitis Research Foundation.

"I applied for the show at the same time while I was working for the charity. So far we've raised £17,654 of our target. The show seemed like a good chance to increase that total.

"I signed up as I love quizzes and always want to challenge myself against the best. I thought that, while a very unorthodox way of fundraising, this could be a good way to get us a bit closer to that target! So all my winnings will be going straight to them.

"I'll be watching it tonight with my housemates and I know my grandparents will call me after seeing me on TV. My family in Birmingham will be watching it together too."

The show sees contestants take on between one and five Chasers at once, depending on their choice and how much cash they seek to win.

Hosted by Bradley Walsh, this series will air across seven nights on ITV in a peak slot, starring five "quiz geniuses": Mark ‘The Beast’ Labbett, Anne ‘The Governess’ Hegerty, Paul ‘The Sinnerman’ Sinha, Jenny ‘The Vixen’ Ryan and Shaun ‘The Dark Destroyer’ Wallace.

Those willing to take on five Chasers could walk away with a huge cash prize.

In the Cash Builder contestants face five multiple choice questions, with the chance to bank up to £5,000. But get the first question wrong and they will be eliminated.

The 'Play' round sees questions swap from contestant to the Chasers, but get a question wrong and their clock keeps counting down until a question is answered correctly. First to run out of time loses the game.

Beat the Chasers continues tonight at 9pm on ITV.
