ITV's Vera crew members left 'petrified' of Brenda Blethyn on first day on set

Brenda Blethyn has revealed that young crew members starting work on Vera are often 'petrified' over her, with her 'acting daft' or cracking a joke to put them at ease on their first day.

BAFTA award winning actress Brenda has starred in plenty of TV shows and films over the years, landing BAFTA and Golden Globe wins for her appearance in Mike Leigh's 1996 film Secrets and Lies which also saw her nominated for an Oscar. She then landed on the Academy Award shortlist two years later, thanks to her star turn in Little Voice, before going onto appear in Saving Grace.

But, for the last decade, it's her exploits as not to be messed with sleuth DCI Vera Stanhope that Brenda is the most known for; with each new series of hit ITV drama Vera attracting interest across the world, as her alter-ego tries to get to the bottom of a growing number of grisly murder mysteries.

The latest run of Vera will wrap up on Sunday, February 19, with The Darkest Evening seeing Vera confronted with her past, after discovering a baby abandoned in a car. Vera author Ann Cleeves has told viewers that the series finale is 'not to be missed' and, discussing the new series, lead actress Brenda was quick to heap praise on her co-stars and crew for all their efforts, especially given they filmed in some appalling weather conditions last year.

And it was wyhen discussing all of the people that work on Vera that Brenda, 76, opened up about the reaction of some of the newcomers to her, telling ITV: "There’s lots of young people who come in to work on the show and they only know Vera from off the telly. So they are all petrified when they come in. I make a point of being daft or making a joke to put them at ease"

She added: "And if they intimate they want some advice I will give it. But they are such talented young people, I usually learn from them. It’s great.”

Vera also opened up on the 'loyalty' that has surrounded and continues to surround Vera, explaining: "The Vera crew are great. Very loyal. When you consider we started filming Vera 13 years ago now, it’s mostly the same crew today. And a lot of local people as well. T

"he loyalty to Vera is phenomenal. Our supporting artists are also very good. They are pretty regular and also loyal. It’s all part of the real teamwork that brings Vera to the screen.."
