ITV's Unforgotten series six confirmed as millions tune into final episode

Fans of Unforgotten will be delighted to learn that the smash hit ITV crime drama will be back for another series, just as millions tuned into watch this year's finale.

There's been a major change of personnel for the latest run of the much loved programme, following the tragic exit of Nicola Walker's character Cassie Stuart after a car crash at the end of series four, popular actress Nicola has been replaced in the new series, by another lead actress, Sinead Keenan, in the role of in the shape of DCI Jessica 'Jess' James.

Unforgotten series 5 has been focused on a murder investigation, following the discovery of human remains in a newly renovated period property in Hammersmith.

A teaser for the sixth and final instalment of series five, which many viewers watched last month, after every episode was made available on ITVX read: "When a second victim is linked to the case the team is faced with the possibility of a double murder. Jess and Sunny must now decipher which of the suspects is telling the truth so justice can finally be served."

Will there be another series of Unforgotten?

Yes, there will indeed be another run, with ITV announcing the news just as credits rolled on Monday night.

The drama, starring Sinéad Keenan and Sanjeev Bhaskar is currently averaging 8.1 million viewers, with episode one of the series the most watched programme on ITV this year, further cementing Unforgotten as a highly-regarded and well-loved drama series.

Sanjeev Bhaskar and Sinéad Keenan will both reprise their roles as DI Sunil 'Sunny' Khan and DCI Jess James for series six, which will follow them as they investigate cold cases and unsolved crimes from the past, unravelling secrets and unearthing buried truths along the way. Further casting for the new series will be announced at the time of production.

Each of the new six episodes will be written by Chris Lang who is also known for his work on Innocent, The Hookup Plan, Dark Heart, A Mother’s Son and the recently BAFTA nominated ITV drama The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe.
