ITV's This Morning interrupted for Nicola Sturgeon breaking news

Daily TV morning show This Morning show was interrupted today to bring viewers an update on a breaking news story. Hosts Dermot O'Leary and Josie Gibson, who have replaced Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield for the week, had to interrupt the show after the usual weather bulletin to switch to ITV's new team.

It was announced on Wednesday, February 15, that Nicola Sturgeon would be stepping down as First Minister of Scotland. You can read live updates here.

This Morning was interrupted on the same day as Josie and Dermot chatted to ITV's political correspondent Harry Horton about the resignation. Harry explained that in the time Nicola had been First Minister of Scotland there had been five UK Prime Ministers and said she had been "hugely successful at the ballot box in Scotland".

Harry also said how Nicola was currently facing some "short-term issues" and "controversies" as she tried to push through a new gender recognition act. However, Nicola has said she is not stepping down due to these issues. Harry said that Nicola will be leaving the Scottish National Party at a "real crossroads" as a general election is expected in 2024.

Dermot and Josie thanked Harry before resuming their normal programming. In her press conference, when Nicola announced she was resigning, she said that the intensity of the job was one of the reasons she was standing down, saying she was "a human being as well as a politician". She said she will stay in office until a successor is found.
