ITV's Quiz writer confirms bizarre courtroom scene did happen after fan confusion

Quiz writer James Graham has revealed a very interesting fact about the coughing courtroom scene that was aired in Wednesday's episode.

After Charles Ingram and his wife Diana were accused of cheating on the show to win the million pounds prize money in 2001, they were arrested and forced to appear in court.

Episode three of the ITV drama aired a replay of the court scenes, with the cast members in the role of the husband and wife.

But one moment viewers had no idea about until it aired on the show was a bizarre coughing fit that ironically erupted across the courtroom.

To eliminate any confusion of whether or not the coughing did actually happen in real life, James took to Twitter to let viewers know the truth.

He revealed: "Yes a collective coughing fit really DID break out in court one day during the coughing major’s trial and the session had to be suspended."

Quiz viewers found the scenes unnerving (ITV)

Charles' cheating accusations came after Diana and another Millionaire hopeful were heard coughing during the show - with it claimed they were giving the answers away.

As the trial got underway, suddenly one man started coughing uncontrollably.

Those in the room began to notice with it becoming quite distracting, only for more people to start spluttering too.

Very quickly half the people in the seats were coughing, with the judge asking all those coughing to "leave" before coughing himself.

Suddenly it was a minute or so of constant coughing from all angles, and viewers were not keen.

While some said the moment was thought provoking and clever, others confessed finding it all about unnerving.

And James went on to reveal another fun fact about what actually did happen back in 2001.

In a follow-up tweet, he wrote: "In real life, when Tarrant entered, the court was starstruck. Huge hush descended This was the first bit Michael filmed.

"Me, cast, crew hadn’t seen him in his gear / heard his voice yet. So he walks in, and a hush descended & we were all [starstruck]."
