ITV's Quiz viewers 'mindblown' over depths Millionaire cheats went to scam show

Viewers of ITV's Quiz, the new series based on the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? cheating scandal in 2001, were "mindblown" over the details.

The new three-part drama focuses on the time leading up to the shocking scam, with viewers learning just how big the deception was.

It also follows the infamous two episodes themselves, and the fallout after the cheating was exposed.

Charles Ingram, wife Diana and a friend were accused of being part of a cheating scam - with coughing said to be used to give contestant Ingram the answers before he won the top prize of one million pounds.

Diana's brother Adrian Pollock was also accused of being part of the scam, with he himself been on the show four times.

But what some viewers didn't know before watching Quiz on ITV on Monday night was that Adrian, and others, had been planning scams for months.

Not only that, but the coughing scandal didn't appear to be the only time money was swindled out of the show by cheats.

In fact, the drama informed fans there was a syndicate of cheating quizzers, and several steps were taken to pull off the money winning.

From a self-made fastest finger machine, to fake 'phone a friends', the quizzers involved had it all planned out.

Desperate not only to make it on the show, but to also win big, the ITV drama showed Adrian had researched how to make it as a contestant, and how to fool the show to not notice the cheating.

One scene saw Adrian show Charles and Diana his fastest finger machine, which he used to practice to ensure he would answer the question in the quickest time and be selected to play.

He was also seen with several other quizzers on stand-by. ready to locate the answer needed by someone who had called their so-called friend or relative - when in fact their 'phone a friend' was neither.

Taking to Twitter, viewers couldn't believe what they were seeing, or that any of it could possibly be real.

One fan said: "I think I speak for the nation when I say, people *actually* went to these lengths? Bloody hell. Much like the actual show, this is absolutely gripping."

Another tweeted: "Anyone have any intel how much of #Quiz is true? Mind is blown so far."

A third added: "This is all mad. I didn’t know that half of this was going on!! Wow."

Meanwhile, a fourth commented: "I didn't realise how intricate this Who Wants To Be A Millionaire scam actually was, I knew Charles Ingram's brother in law and wife were on it before him but man, this is some mental planning."

Quiz continues Tuesday and Wednesday at 9pm on ITV.
