ITV's Lorraine in tears as she's surprised by her best friend live on the show

An emotional Lorraine Kelly couldn't believe it when Dr Amir Khan surprised her live with a very special guest.

The 62-year-old Scottish presenter was brought to tears after the programme's resident doctor brought Lorraine's best friend Joyce onto the show. The pair have been friends for more than 50 years since meeting at school in Scotland.

But Lorraine had no idea they were about to reunited live on air. She was presenting Friday's show when the GP caught her completely off guard and announced he had a special surprise in store for the host.

A confused Lorraine said: "It is always nice to see you but I didn't expect you today."

She had to wait until after the break to discover what he had planned and was left crying when the surprise was revealed saying: "Doctor Amir, I've been trying to quiz you in the break as to what my surprise might be. What's going on?"

He quipped: "It's quite nice being in control Lorraine. Well you know February is the month of love, we want to celebrate the love of friendship so watch this.

"There is lots of different types of love, and we want to celebrate the love of friendship."

Lorraine was shown a moving video montage, called Friends for Life, with messages from her old school friend Joyce who has been close to the broadcaster for more than 50 years.

Describing her best friend at school, Joyce said: "She was funny, she was witty, and she was a little bit of a rebel. Whatever was happening in school, Lorraine liked to go her own path.

"We have got a really strong connection. We refused to let the friendship melt away. A little bit of it might be about her not having a sister, and me not having a sister."

When Joyce, who now lives in France, talked about the death of her father, she said that Lorraine was there for her, and had got on the first plane to Scotland.

"She knew I needed her, and there she was," said Joyce. "When Lorraine's daughter Rosie was born, I ran into my boss' office and told him I had to go because I had to see the new baby. We were late for my wedding ceremony because she wouldn't stop crying and had to get her make-up fixed.

"I love her to bits. We are going to be best friends for ever, that is how it is going to be."

Back in the studio, Dr Amair then revealed to a tearful Lorraine that her friend was actually in the studio.

"I can't believe you kept this from me," Lorraine scolded her friend. "Does this mean we can go out? I can't believe you did this for me.

"We know everything about each other. We can pick up the conversation no matter how long it has been."
