ITV's I'm A Celebrity hit with thousands of Ofcom complaints

I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! has been hit with thousands of Ofcom complaints from viewers watching at home, just over a week after it launched.

Fans of the ITV reality TV show are raging about disgraced Tory MP Matt Hancock entering the jungle and almost 2,000 people have taken to the media regulator to express their disgust.

There's been much controversy over the former UK health secretary's arrival Down Under after he broke his own coronavirus rules at the height if the pandemic - forcing him to resign.

A total of 1,967 Ofcom complaints have been made so far, the broadcasting regulator has confirmed. There were 72 complaints submitted on November 9, coinciding with Matt's arrival, followed by 737 between November 12 and 14, reports Manchester Evening News.

Ofcom were then inundated with with 1,159 Ofcom complaints in the week between November 8 to November 14.

Ofcom has confirmed that the majority of complainants, around 1,100, objected to Matt's appearance in the jungle while other viewers expressed concerns about how the MP was being treated by the other contestants.

A statement from Ofcom to Metro.co.uk says: "It’s worth being aware that under our rules, in principle – and taking into account freedom of expression – there’s no ban on any particular person taking part in programmes.

"However, if the mere presence of a person is likely to cause offence, we would expect broadcasters to take steps to mitigate or justify that offence. How they do that editorially, is up to them."
