ITV responds amid Love Island backlash to 'uncomfortable' Faye and Teddy scenes

ITV has responded following a social media backlash towards Love Island for airing "uncomfortable" scenes between Faye Winter and Teddy Soares.

On Friday night's show, Faye launched into a sweary tirade at partner Teddy over his comments in Casa Amor, which she had only just seen after the producers' movie night challenge saw her shown clips from earlier in the series. The scenes saw her put an end to their romantic relationship.

Across the episode, Faye also vocally criticised Jake Cornish for "hyping" up the boys to flirt with the girls in Casa Amor, while later clashing with Dale Mehmet after he tried to diffuse the situation.

In the aftermath of the instalment, fans flocked to social media to complain about the scenes, with many questioning why the show allowed the scenes to occur and be shown on television.

The welfare of both Teddy and Faye was a concern for viewers of the show on social media.

One of those complaining penned: "made an Ofcom complaint about #LoveIsland tonight because I should have done so last week. it's beyond unethical to allow what happened in tonight's episode to go ahead without intervention, never mind to broadcast it as entertainment".

Now, spokesperson for ITV commented to The Mirror in a statement: "Welfare and duty of care towards our contributors is always our primary concern, and we take the emotional well-being of all the Islanders extremely seriously."

They continued: "We have dedicated welfare producers and psychological support on hand at all times who monitor and regularly speak to all of the Islanders in private and off camera, especially if someone appears to be upset.

"All the Islanders are therefore fully supported by the professionals on-site and by their friends in the villa."

They concluded: "Islanders can always reach out and talk to someone if they feel the need."

The statement comes after the show announced earlier this year that there were fresh stringent measures in place to protect the mental health of contestants during and after their time on the reality series.

Following the end of Friday's show, Faye's loved ones have yet to comment on social media, while Teddy's loved ones penned on Instagram : "Tonight was hard to watch. Here’s an appreciation post for Teddy! Thanks for all the love".

*Love Island continues on Sunday at 9pm on ITV2 and ITV Hub, with previous episodes available on ITV Hub and added to BritBox the following morning.
