ITV respond after Love Island viewers make Michael and Amber Ofcom complaints

ITV says it strives to protect Love Island contestants as the broadcaster responded to news of viewers sending in more than 200 Ofcom complaints about the latest two episodes.

Viewers were shocked by episodes on Tuesday and Wednesday, where Michael and Amber argued after the fireman dumped the Gateshead beauty technician so he could couple up with new islander, Joanne.

Ofcom confirmed it has received about last night's Love Island episode and another 36 from viewers who watched Tuesday's show.

ITV sent a statement to ChronicleLive in response to news of the Ofcom complaints.

It says: "We have a duty of care to all of the islanders and we have dedicated welfare producers and psychological support on hand at all times who monitor and regularly speak to all of the Islanders in private and off camera, especially if someone appears to be upset.

"All the Islanders are therefore fully supported by the professionals on site and by their friends in the villa.

"We would strongly discourage anyone from following social media commentary that labels Islanders in potentially defamatory or damaging ways, especially when they have no opportunity to respond.

"Social media negativity is of course very distressing for their families to read, and we strive to protect them from this where we can.

During an argument, Michael called Amber 'a child' and 'pathetic'. He also accused Amber of failing to open up to him, but fellow islander Anna defended Amber and claimed Michael has twisted the truth about their romance to justify his choice to pair up with a new islander.
