But how close was the public vote in the end?

Viewers had two opportunities to vote for their favourite couple on the Love Island app.

This is the breakdown of the final results:

Millie and Liam - 42.02 per cent

Chloe and Toby - 30.85 per cent

Faye and Teddy - 14.85 per cent

Kaz and Tyler - 12.27 per cent

Monday's finale received a mix of criticism on social media, with some fans fuming over 'Kyler' coming in fourth place.

"NAH!!!!! Kaz brought so much genuine JOY, FUN and EXCEPTIONAL outfits to the villa," raged one fan on Twitter.

Meanwhile, viewers were left confused by Liam asking Millie to be his girlfriend when speaking to host Laura Whitmore.

Many thought they were already officially an item, leaving them thinking he'd asked her to marry him.

"Am I hallucinating or did Liam just propose?" asked one fan on Twitter.

And another, on realising that he hadn't popped the question, said: "That was boring, if Liam really wanted to shake things up he should have proposed. This is the final. Go big and ridiculous or go home."

Whitmore also confirmed Love Island will return next year for its eighth season - and those interested in entering the villa can already apply to be on the show.
