ITV planning to bring Champions League coverage back to terrestrial TV

ITV is set to bid to bring the Champions League back to terrestrial TV when UEFA holds its latest auction of British broadcasting rights, the Times reports.

UEFA sent the tender out to interested parties this week, for the period from 2021-24, and the report states that ITV are keen to recapture the broadcast rights of Europe’s elite competition.

Sky Sports are also poised to mount a serious challenge, as the pair look to break BT Sport’s current exclusive rights to the coverage - which they have held until 2015.

Previously, ITV and Sky used to hold the joint rights for the Champions League , alternating match days for terrestrial and subscription TV, but were blown out of the water by BT four years ago.

However, the lack of terrestrial partner has led to UEFA having to accept much lower public exposure in the UK for it’s flagship club competition - which can be seen as an issue.

ITV also lost rights to the highlights show in 2017, which is also exclusive to BT Sport, although BT have made clips and highlights available for free on social media.
