ITV Martin Lewis donates thousands after struggling single mum's story left him close to tears

Martin Lewis has donated thousands after a single mum's story left him 'near tears'.

The 49-year-old said he was left 'shaking' after last week's edition of his ITV Martin Lewis Money Show.

It came as he spoke about the huge rise in energy bills hitting people across the country.

And single mum Sara appeared on the show and said she couldn’t afford her energy bills after her partner died of Covid-19.

Martin tweeted after the show: "I feel near tears after doing my show. I started doing what I do out of a passion for financial justice & providing solutions.

"To be unable to help a single mum who lost her partner in Covid afford her energy bills leaves me feeling impotent.

"I'm shaking Intervention is needed."

Returning to his money show on last night (January 13), Martin's co-host Angelica Bell gave an update on the heart-breaking situation.

"It was quite a powerful and emotional show last week and we've had so many people get in touch to say thank you to you Martin for at least helping them understand what's happening even if you can't do anything to help them directly," she opened the show.

"We've had this in from Caroline... 'Martin... as a single bereaved parent myself I can say you are an absolute angel. My life partner used to sort the bills and it's a lot taking it all on yourself initially but with your guidance it's a godsend. Thank you for all you do'."

MoneySavingExpert founder Martin then said: "Well as I said last week, I wish I could do more over the energy situation. Hopefully tonight I can help you recoup some of that money. That's in relation to Sara who was wonderful on our show last week."

Angelica then added: "You have been in the news this week Martin. You donated £100,000 to a charity called National Energy Action to increase support and set up a web chat for the most vulnerable."

Martin replied: "The truth is after last week's show I was quite upset because I like to have the tools to be able to help people and I didn't have any.

"And I went home, my wife was away working and my little girl was in bed and I felt quite lonely and I thought, I have to do something and I spent some time researching and I contacted the charity the next day and they have a helpline to help people with their energy bills and they're gonna need it in April because there are going to be millions more in fuel poverty.

"Hopefully doing a web chat will free up the helpline and enable them to help more."
