ITV Loose Women pulled off the air after major announcement

Loose Women was hauled off-air to make way for the announcement of who would be the next Prime Minister on Monday afternoon.

The ITV daytime show had to be cut short for an ITV News special as the results of Conservative leadership were made public.

Fans of the show were given plenty time to prepare for the interruption though, as This Morning presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield gave a brief warning a breaking news announcement would be made but offered no sign of when regular programming would return.

The topical chat show Loose Women was due to start at 12:30 pm but viewers watched as cameras cut to a studio with Conservative parties banners. The breaking news segment was put in place in order to give the public live coverage of the next Prime Minister being announced.

During the wait, Holly and Phil remained on the screen to discuss the news with their political correspondent. They offered viewers a run down over the last few weeks as Rishi Sunak and Lizz Truss battled it out to become the next Conservative leader.

Liz Truss defeated rival Rishi Sunak with 81,326 votes to 60,399 and will take over as prime minister on Tuesday with the immediate challenge of easing the cost-of-living crisis for households across the country faced with soaring energy bills.

Boris Johnson departed No 10 on Tuesday morning and Ms Truss will fly to Balmoral to meet the Queen for the formal handover of power.
