ITV launches 'Million Claps' fundraising campaign for NHS workers

ITV is launching a fundraising campaign for the NHS in the wake of the coronavirus crisis.

Good Morning Britain hosts Ben Shephard and Susanna Reid made the announcement during today's show and said the channel will partner with NHS Charities Together to deliver the project.

The NHS Charities Million Claps Appeal will officially kick off tonight, as the nation once again takes to doorsteps, gardens and windows to show appreciation for the workers who are risking their lives to keep the country going.

Susanna said: "We can exclusively reveal ITV's partnership with NHS charities together as part of a new campaign which aims to raise millions of pounds to support those staff, who frankly, are risking their lives every day in the fight against this retched virus."

The fundraiser has already been backed by David Walliams and Queen guitarist Brian May, who has produced a special version of We Will Rock You.

Ben added: "The NHS Charities Millions Claps Appeal launches this evening to coincide with the applauding on the doorstep, we want at least a million people to show their backing for the NHS.

"David Walliams has lent his voice to the campaign, as you can hear the Queen song We Will Rock You has been re-written with Brian May involved with us aswell, so it now says NHS We Love You."

Meanwhile, resident medical expert Dr Hilary, who has been providing vital updates and information about the virus for worried viewers across ITV's morning schedule over the past couple of months, then slated celebrities who don't donate their own money.

He said: "I think there is a mentality that the rules apply to everybody else, for some people, but actually everybody has to do their bit and it's really really important.

"We were hearing about footballers just now, and I think the same applies to top entertainers who can earn a lot of money.

"They can either donate money or they can volunteer to do good work and support the NHS, or they can do both, but some people aren't doing either.

"There are people who can do a little bit more, but everybody can adhere by the rules and actually this will make a difference.

"It'll cut down virus transmission and it will get us out of lockdown quicker..."

'Clap for our Carers' took place at 8pm throughout the United Kingdom last Thursday to pay a special thanks to health workers but also to those classed as key workers after a similar tribute the week before.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV
