ITV journalist Emily Morgan's heartbreaking last words to colleagues before she died age 45

Journalist Emily Morgan told her ITV colleagues how she wanted to be remembered before she tragically passed away last week at the age of 45.

The health and science editor for ITV died on Friday after a short battle with lung cancer.

Before her passing, the broadcaster had said that despite her impressive career achievements - including tireless frontline reporting during the Covid-19 pandemic - her biggest legacy in her own opinion was being a mother, sister, a wife and a friend.

According to the Mirror, she had previously said: "They are the things that matter."

ITN announced the mum-of-two's death in a statement on Twitter.

The post read: "We are devastated at the passing of our remarkable colleague Emily Morgan. Emily was a hugely talented journalist and a much-loved friend and mentor to so many here. She will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with Emily's family."

Geraint Vincent paid tribute to his colleague's last wishes as he choked back tears at the end of News At 10 on Friday night.

He said: "Tonight we have something to report that has affected all of us at ITV news very deeply.

"It is the death after a short illness of our on-screen colleague and much-loved friend Emily Morgan, our much loved health and science editor.

"Emily worked here for 23 years first behind the scenes as a producer, but for most of that time lighting up our programmes every day as a political and then health reporter.

"At 45 years old, she was at the very top of her game as anyone who followed her peerless reporting of the Covid pandemic will remember well.

"But she was also, as she wanted the world to know, a mum to her two cherished daughters, a wife, a sister and a daughter herself and it is with all of her family that our thoughts are with tonight."

Andrew Dagnell, editor of the ITV Network News, added: "Our thoughts are with Emily's family. Emily was proud to be a journalist, but she was even more proud of her family.

"She adored them. We are sending them our love and support at this unthinkably difficult time.

"Emily was an exceptional journalist, a devoted mother and wife, and a true trailblazer in our field. Her friendship, her professionalism and her enormous contribution to our industry and to the public conversation will not be forgotten."

Emily investigated the trend of NHS patients in England and Wales being forced to seek private healthcare in her final broadcast report before her death.

Emily spoke to patients turning to private healthcare after struggling to get access to NHS treatment for her final report, which aired on ITV News on March, 30.

In the report, Emily visited a private hospital in Manchester and explained: "Here in the UK, private hospitals like this one run by Spire have seen a whopping 81 percent increase in revenue from people paying for their own care and many of their new patients have never considered depending on anything else but the NHS."

Emily spoke to professor Pat Price from Imperial College who revealed that international data shows that for every four week delay in diagnosis and treatment there can be on average a 10 percent increase in the death rate.

Paying tribute to his colleague, ITV's royal editor Chris Ship added: "She was such a beautiful person and a dear friend. As Health Editor, Emily was fearless in reporting Covid to the nation in 2020. Talented, kind, full of humanity. She was 45."
