ITV I'm A Celebrity bosses introduce ban after trial sparks complaints

I'm A Celebrity is back again, with the show having returned to Gwrych Castle in Wales amid travel restrictions to Australia.

Richard Madeley and Snoochie Shy are among the celebs who have taken part in grisly trials so far in this year's series.

Previous years have seen contestants eating live insects, when the show was set in the Australian outback.

But a few years ago, I'm A Celebrity came under fire for animal cruelty since TOWIE star Ferne McCann ate a live water spider in 2015.

Later, in 2019, bosses banned the contestants form eating live insects during the bushtucker trials, Birmingham Live reports.

The notorious eating trial is an I'm A Celeb favourite with viewers but bosses decided to ban eating live insects after a public outcry.

Widlife experts and animal rights activists - including BBC presenter Chris Packman - spoke out against the trial and described it as "cruel" and "abusive" for its treatment of live animals.

The 2019 series marked the first time that live insects weren't used during the trial as Roman Kemp and Adele Roberts took on the eating challenge.

Announcing the ban, a source told BBC's Newsbeat: "I’m A Celebrity producers have taken a look at the trials and decided that no live critters would be eaten in the trials this year.

"They have been planning this for some time and actually last year beach worms were the only critters eaten live but this time around they’ve decided to implement the change fully and permanently."

I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here airs at 9pm on ITV and the ITV Hub.
