ITV Good Morning Britain viewers furious that prisoners could get IVF treatment

GMB fans were left fuming today - over the suggestion that prisoners could be entitled to IVF treatment.

Aaron Newman is serving 31 years for the "brutal murder" of a mum-of-two.

Newman believes he has a human right to become a father and wants access to IVF so his girlfriend can become pregnant.

The subject was debated on GMB this morning , with prison campaigner Cody Lechey arguing for prisoners to have the right to conjugal visits.

He said: "You don't stop being a person when you enter prison, why should your partner be damaged by your criminality, I believe you have more chance getting IVF in prison than in some parts of the UK.

Eye-watering figures reveal exactly how much Merseyside council chiefs took home last year

"This is an extremely rare privilege and I believe conjugal visits would reduce violence in our prisons."

But criminal barrister Jerry Hayes said the proposal was a "slap in the face."

He said: "This is a slap in the face for those who are waiting for IVF, the majority of people, law-abiding people don't get it and prisoners would jump the queue.

"And what about the families of the victims, they will think what sort of child would the prisoner bring up."

However Mr Hayes was undecided on conjugal visits, saying it was "tricky", he said: "I don't think conjugal visits is a bad idea, it should be something that is looked at, but I don't think it will ever happen in the UK.

GMB viewers were outraged by the proposal however, with many taking to social media to slam the idea.

One said: "IVF is NOT a 'human right', it's a treatment which is either funded by the NHS/paid for privately for people who have fertility problems or can't conceive naturally. A prisoners punishment is having their freedom taken away. Rewarding prisoners on this level is ludicrous."

Another said: "Everything that is wrong with this country was just being discussed on #gmb IVF for murderers as it’s their human right? What about the rights of the person killed and their family? Absolutely sickening."

And a third said: "AHH! Outrageous prisoners should have IVF! Trying to get anything over & above the norm in the NHS is next to impossible these days & to know prisoners might get these services is MADDENING!! I’m all for exploring ways to cut recidivism, but not this."

*GMB continues at 6am on ITV tomorrow
