ITV Good Morning Britain viewers divided over 'wrong' A-level segment as presenter makes error

Good Morning Britain viewers were left feeling uneasy as they tuned into the show on Thursday (August 18). Kate Garraway was back at the help of the ITV news programme and was joined by ITV News' Paul Brand who made his hosting debut after appearing on the show previously in a guest role.

The Welsh broadcaster, who broke a series of stories around the government's 'Partygate' scandal, helped Kate wake up the nation with the latest breaking news and other headlines, including A-Level results. Young people across the country have been receiving their results today with many waiting to find out if they have managed to get into their university of choice.

And GMB sent one of the show's correspondents Pip Tomson down to a school to join some students as they opened their results live on air. She spoke to the students and asked them one by one where they were hoping to go on to study next and what they were hoping to see on their results card paper.

She then got each of the to open their envelopes. One of the students who opened her results live on air was called Ellie who said she would like to go on to do maths tutoring at a secondary school during a gap year before studying law. Ellie had an anxious wait before she started opening her results envelope and was reminded not to swear live on air. She was stunned as she received A, A* and a C in her A-Level results.

Another student, Olivia, burst into tears when she found at she had received three A*'s with plans to study medicine and become a doctor. And Dylan, who was hoping for Bs, got D, D, C but he did have an unconditional offer for his chosen university despite looking deflated by the results as the camera moved on to watch the next student find out their grades.

Olivia cried after opening her results alongside Pip (ITV)

But GMB viewers were left uncomfortable by the scenes. @UnInterlocutor tweeted: "Does anyone else find this exam results theatre weird? It is a private matter - not news. #GMB." @Megsylouise said: "#GMB having kids open results on camera is awful. To then say at least you have an unconditional offer is wrong. Poor lad."

@MLauren9 wrote: "Having kids open exam results live on TV is absolutely AWFUL #gmb." @Colabubble replied: "I'm glad it's not only me who thinks this! Every year they subject us to it.. I can't bear it. I guess the youngsters doing it live on air are happy to do so but I think it just ramps up the pressure for them AND for others."

It was also pointed out that Pip showed one of the pupil's personal information (ITV)

@hollgolds penned: "This is wrong on every level. Way to put these kids under pressure #goodmorningbritain #GMB." @FlopsyPickle added: "I find this whole putting nervous students opening their exam results live on tv really odd. The students not being filmed directly still have the added nerves of a tv crew being in the school. Not sure I’d like it #GMB."

And there was also a moment where Pip asked Olivia to show her results paper to the camera to show her three A*'s. However, some tuning in from home pointed out a problem. @FlopsyPickle said: "Yeah just flash her private details on national telly #GMB." @thomasoxley echoed: "That’s it. Just show her results on national tv which has her personal information on!! #GMB."
