ITV Good Morning Britain viewers divided over whether staring should be a legal offence

Good Morning Britain viewers were left in two minds over Friday morning's ending segment of the ITV show, on whether the act of staring should be considered a crime or not.

Comedian and activist Kate Smurthwaite was on the positive end of the argument, stating that a mixture of staring, touching body parts and heavy breathing should and could be considered harassment.

Journalist and gender historian Dr Zoe Strimpel was playing devil's advocate on this argument, claiming that there are much more important sexual harassment and assault issues that we should be focusing on rather than being 'gawked at' on public transport.

Guest Kate argued that: "We shouldn't have to pick and choose which side of harassment should be considered a crime, it all should be included under the legislation."

As the guests debated back and forth on the show, ITV Good Morning Britain viewers done some arguing of their own over on social media.

One Twitter user said: "Truly can not believe what I'm seeing on @GMB "should staring be made a crime?" #WorldsGoneNuts #GMB"

Another said: "#gmb yes let’s make staring a crime … wtf."

And a third wrote: "Staring should be made a crime ! Okay how about we ban making eye contact, ban sunglasses, execute the blind or partially sighted ! Punish people for not looking at the floor ! WTF are we coming to as a people in the UK ? Get a bloody grip. #GMB"

Others disagreed with this viewpoint, with one stating: " yes staring is unnerving and creepy. A few seconds and a smile. yes but a constant stare can be intimidating. #GMB"

Another said: "Staring ? What they are describing on @GMB is what EVERY FEMALE experiences mostly on a daily basis #GMB #staring"

And one joked: "if you want to stare at birds on the train simply cut two holes in a newspaper. job done #gmb"
