ITV Good Morning Britain viewers cringing as "Jilted John" proposes to girlfriend for second time

Good Morning Britain fans were left cringing today as a man proposed to his girlfriend - who had previously jilted him.

John Whitbread was jilted back in 2015 and grabbed headlines all over the world - as he raffled off the couples honeymoon to the Domincian Republic.

John went on his honeymoon with a stranger - Kelly Wood - but romance failed to blossom between the pair.

But now four years later John is back with his former fiancee Amy Jackson - and today he had a very special question to ask her.

The couple went to a cafe in Derbyshire, but Amy was unaware they would soon be appearing on GMB.

John "popped to the loo" while a choir began to sing the couples favourite song - Tom Walker's "Just you and I"

Then John appeared with presenter Katy Rickett who said: "Amy I just want to warn you you are live on GMB and John has a very special question for you."

John then said: "Amy you're my best friend and my soulmate will you marry me."

With Amy saying enthusiastically: "Yes I will."

Speaking afterwards Amy said: "I didn't have a clue - I knew the choir were singing our favourite song but then when John didn't appear I had no idea what was going on."

John said: "I couldn't eat and was trying to be normal, I couldn't sleep at all last night.

"I was so lucky to have such a perfect proposal today.

"When me and Amy broke up I was always thinking back to Amy - once you've met someone like that you cant forget them."

Explaining why she jilted John in the first place she said: "It was all rushed, a whirlwind, I just got panicked and got cold feet, but there was never any animosity between us."

But viewers were less than impressed with the proposal, and took to social media in their droves.

One said: "That was cringetastic."

Another said: "This Jilted John proposal is a cringe fest. Almost enough to put me off my breakfast."

A third added: "Omg I would literally want to crawl into a hole and die."

And a fourth commented: "Got my cash ready for the next honeymoon raffle."

*GMB continues on ITV at 6am on Monday
