ITV Good Morning Britain's Susanna Reid pulls face as Richard Madeley's remark about Downing Street cleaner comes under fire

Susanna Reid appeared taken aback by one of Richard Madeley's latest comments as they appeared on Good Morning Britain. The presenters were back at the helm of the ITV daytime show on Tuesday (October 18) as they continued to discuss the latest political fallout following Jeremy Hunt's u-turn on the mini budget.

Liz Truss is also facing calls to resign and has been warned by a senior minister that she cannot afford to make any more mistakes as she battles to stay in No 10. The Prime Minister will chair a meeting of the Cabinet and is also expected to hold talks with the European Research Group of Tory MPs after being forced to watch as her entire economic strategy was torn up by the new Chancellor.

As expected, the latest episode of GMB was dominated by Truss and her goverment after she declared she intends to lead the Conservative Party into the next general election, although ultimately that may not be her choice if MPs move against her.

But at one point during the show, Richard made a comment about a Downing Street cleaner who was spotted live on air during co-star Louisa James' report from outside Number 10, ITV cut back to Richard laughing at the image of someone cleaning the front door amid the political chaos.

"I thought the image of Louisa as she was there live on camera describing the sinking of the government ship," the 62-year-old said. "The guy polishing the front door, the flunky polishing the front door behind her of Number 10."

He added: "That was so analogous to the deck chairs being rearranged on the deck of the Titanic. Who cares if the doors are shiny? It’s the least important thing of the day!" As Richard made the comments, Susanna widened her eyes before pulling a face and attempting to move on with programme.

And it appears the use of the word 'flunky' didn't got down well with viewers either. @MikePhillips50 tweeted: "#GMB don't call the guy polishing the door a flunky, it's just a fella doing his job." @SteveMacpompey fumed: “@GMB Madeley just called the guy cleaning Number 10’s front door, a 'flunky'. Who the hell does he think he is!"

@MickHanz complained: "Richard Madeley on GMB has just called a man a 'flunky' live on air. He seemed to think it amusing that a 'flunky' was cleaning the front door of No10 that 'flunky' Is just a man trying to earn a living, struggling to make a living #GMB." @ShedStoker added: "Flunky! @richardm56 Poor Old Show chap. That fellow looks to me that he’s doing a great job and deserves respect. #GMB."
