ITV Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway told she 'smells' by guest as Ed Balls forced to bat off weight jibe

Kate Garraway said she was left 'crumpled' after she was told by a Good Morning Britain guest that she 'smells'. The presenter was back at the helm of the ITV news programme on Wednesday (February 22) alongside Ed Balls as she stepped in for Susanna Reid.

Kate is often seen hosting the show at the end of the week but following the half-term break, Susanna headed to Kyiv to report live from the Ukrainian city as a year approaches since Russia's invasion began. She spent Monday and Tuesday hosting from the Ukraine capital before returning to the UK.

But as she made her way back, Kate and Ed kept GMB on the air in her absence and were joined on the latest show by disaster search and rescue volunteers Neil Woodmansey, Ashley Hildred and Mark Dungworth. The hosts interviewed the trio of firefighters about travelling to Turkey to help those affected by the devastating earthquake earlier this month.

They were also joined by Colin the collie who also assisted Neil, Ashley and Mark during their 10 days of helping with the rescue effort. After chatting for a few minutes, Kate, 55, asked: "For all those people watching who can't get their dog to walk to heel, how did you train Colin to be so extraordinary? Give us some tips."

Neil explained how Colin was obsessed with toys as a reward as a puppy. "So what you do is, you've got the toy and you don't give him it, you tease him so he barks at you and then he gets the toy," he shared. "So eventually, and I am not being rude Kate but you smell, I mean we all smell," Neil added.

Co-host, and former Labour MP, Ed quickly jumped in to quip: "I mean tell me about it, tell me about it! It's all in the morning, thank God you've said it." Kate then awkwardly laughed as she held her show notes close to her face before adding slightly embarrassed: "I am just crumpling."

But Neil admitted what he said "came out wrong" as she tried to laugh off his remark and asked him to carry on explaining how Colin was trained. "The reality is we all smell and the dog will always pick up your scent," he went on. "The idea is you hide [a toy] and the collie comes leaping for it and the idea is if your smell is coming out Colin will smell it."

The adorable dog then sat up on the GMB sofa and let out a soft bark and grumble. which led Kate to joke: "You see, Colin is jumping to my defence." But it wasn't just Kate who could have been left offended on today's show.

Earlier in the programme, Ed and Kate had been discussing the current fruit and veg shortage hitting supermarket shoppers with regular guests Kevin Maguire and Andrew Pierce. However, the conversation took an unexpected turn when journalist Kevin told Ed: "It doesn't look like you've seen a salad for a while."

He then took another swipe at the former Strictly Come Dancing star later on. After the front page of the Daily Star about the vegetable shortage was shown to viewers, Ed asked: "Who eats lettuce in February?"

To which Kevin replied: "Well, maybe not you Ed. It doesn't look like you've seen a salad for a while, I hope you don't take that the wrong way!" Ed was left open-mouthed by the sudden jibe and replied: "For God's sake." But Kevin did apologise to Ed before Kate expertly tried to move the conversation along and bring it back on topic.
