ITV Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway 'close to tears' as Rob Rinder sends tribute

Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway was close to tears as Rob Rinder sent an emotional tribute.

The two anchored Tuesday's edition of the ITV news programme. It was the first time the broadcasters have hosted the show together and the TV judge took the opportunity to heap praise on Kate.

Kate has been caring for her husband, Derek Draper, since he fell seriously ill after contracting coronavirus. She documented her husbands gruelling road to recovery in an ITV documentary named Caring for Derek which aired earlier this year.

Rob issued a heartfelt tribute to Kate as he revealed the documentary had been shortlisted for a National Television Award. He said: "First of all you're sunshine in human form.

"I just want to say more than anything else you model the possibility against the backdrop of darkness of being light in every sense. 'm so proud of you today with your amazing documentary, Caring For Derek, being shortlisted for a National Television Award.

"Your capacity to use the platform you have for change, for authenticity just makes me proud to know you."

Kate was overwhelmed after the emotional tribute. She said: "Oh my god, that's so lovely. I'm gonna cry."

Kate revealed on Instagram last month that she was forced to take an extended break from her hosting duties last after Derek's health took "an unexpected and frightening" turn. She said: "I have taken some time off Good Morning Britain, Smooth Radio and Garraway's Good Stuff in the last three weeks as Derek's health took an unexpected and frightening turn for the worse that landed him back in intensive care and fighting for his life - again.

"Thanks to the amazing NHS team and his own extraordinary life force and spirit Derek - please God - is back on the right side of it now."
