ITV Good Morning Britain's Dr Hilary warning as he fears second peak of coronavirus

Good Morning Britain's Dr Hilary has issued a warning over relaxing lockdown rules as he fears a second peak of coronavirus.

The resident TV doctor said "we can't even think about the end of lockdown yet", as the Prime Minister faces pressure to relax rules by May 7.

Boris Johnson is resuming full-time duties today at the head of the Government three weeks after he was admitted to hospital with the disease.

He has less than two weeks before the next major decision point comes up with the next three-week review of the lockdown restrictions due on May 7.

But Dr Hilary warned of what a grave mistake it would be to relax restrictions.

He said: "As a doctor, I look at the number of cases we had at the end of January, two reported cases, but now just about 55 days later, we've got 35,000 to 40,000 deaths if you include the deaths in care homes as well.

"That is an enormous toll that it is taking on our society. This virus behaves in ways we don't fully understand at all, there's a lot of ignorance about this virus.

"It affects all age groups for a long time when they get it severely and that's why we can't even think about end of lockdown yet."

He continued: "Because if we allow a second peak, it's going to cause a lot more deaths.

"We are perhaps talking about this prematurely, yes we need to end lockdown to a certain extent by phasing it, by doing it in stages of the right people at the right time.

"But to let people think this is nearly over is completely wrong."
