ITV GMB viewers slam Richard Madeley's 'Alan Partridge' moment after comparing Russian war crimes to story about man on bus

Richard Madeley went full " Alan Partridge " as he compared Russian war crimes to an old legal story about a man on a bus.

Good Morning Britain viewers admitted they were confused by Richard's bizarre chat.

Richard was in the middle of an interview with MP Lucy Powell alongside Kate Garraway and they began talking about sanctions imposed on Russia.

As he questioned Vladimir Putin's atrocities and what could be done to deal with them, he introduced a hypothetical analogy which seemed to be a bit too complex for the chat.

Viewers admitted they were baffled at the relevance of the story and he was once again compared to spoof inept broadcaster "Alan Partridge". Richard was also slated after he interrupted the shadow secretary.

Lucy said: "It's appalling, the atrocities that we're seeing unfolding day in, day out.

"The criminal actions of the Russian army is just truly appalling and none of us thought we would see this in this day and age, did we? In this era, in a European Western country - it's absolutely awful.

"I mean the sanctions can go further, could be tougher. There remains, I think, too many loopholes and trust.

"We've been calling for those loopholes to be closed down long before this atrocity began to unfold.

"And we also support much more military aid, actually the UK government has been pretty good on that, but we think that could go further and faster as well."

Richard then responded 'in full Partridge' : "There used to be, and I guess there still is, a legal definition of what is reasonable to believe.

"It was called What the Man on the Clapham Omnibus would believe?"

"And it was applied to libel cases - would it be reasonable if a man on a Clapham omnibus decided that someone had been lied about?

"And if he did, then that was the legal test, and I suspect if there was such a man alive today, sitting on a Clapham Omnibus and you asked him or her, 'is president Putin a war criminal?' The resounding get back would be, 'yes, he absolutely is'."

Lucy then began talking about supplies to Ukraine but Richard interrupted her saying: "Just going to energy and energy costs - sorry to cut in, we're very tight for time on today's show. Sorry to bring your answer to a close."

Follwing Richard's ramblings, one viewers said: "The old Clapham Omnibus analogy...eh?

"What's Richard Madeley wibbling on about now??? Utter nonsense! Even Kate's looking bewildered with his weird line of questioning and constantly bringing WW2 up... #gmb."

Someone else said: :"Pound shop Partidge. If Steve Coogan sat down for the first time this morning to create Alan Partridge , he'd use Richard Madeley as a base for starting his creation! #poundshoppartridge "

Another added: "It's a victorian legal term which means the average person in today's language."
