ITV deny Footballers' Wives is coming back as Facebook announcement confirmed as hoax

ITV say there is no truth to claims that Footballers' Wives is coming back to screens, after a Facebook post 'announcing' its return went viral on Monday night.

It was 19 years ago when we first got embroiled in the trials, tribulations and titillations of the players of fictional team Earls Park and their other halves and many were instantly hooked.

Characters like Jason and Tanya Turner, chairman Frank Laslett, Ian and Donna Wamsley, and Kyle Pascoe and glamour model other half Chardonnay Lane, got up to all sorts and we couldn't get enough!

Who can forget memorable moments including Tanya getting her talons into baby-faced signing Darius Fry; Amber fake-tanning Tanya's baby; Chardonnay having her fake boobs burnt on her hen night; a certain snooker table scene and THAT aeroplane encounter?!

Out of the blue on Monday a post appeared on Facebook to announce Footballers' Wives return, with it reading: "The cult hit TV show Footballers' Wives will return to ITV in 2022 with four original characters and a whole host of new and exciting characters."

The post, claimed that the new series would see now married couple Tanya and Hazel Bailey-Turner take over Earls Park with Kyle as manager.

It also claimed Laiila Rouass would be returning as Amber Gates and EastEnders actress Samantha Womack and former Bad Girls star Simone Lahbib would be joining the cast.

However, on Tuesday afternoon, a spokesperson for ITV poured cold water on the speculation and dashed fans' hopes, telling ChronicleLive : "There's no truth to this story."

Some fans, while longing for Footballers' Wives return were sceptical from the outset, with one reacting: "I would love for it to return, but I have just read that article doing the rounds and it screams fake to me."

In agreement, another fan tweeted: "As much as I’d like to see #FootballersWives return, I very much doubt it will!"
