ITV cuts The Masked Singer celeb from first episode due to 'potential insensitivities' in light of tragic Switzerland NYE fire that killed 40 people

ITV's The Masked Singer axed a performance by Red Panda on Saturday night just hours before it went on air.

Executives decided to make a last-minute edit as airing the performance was considered potentially "insensitive" following a deadly fire in a Swiss nightclub that killed over 40 people.

Red Panda and the secret celebrity inside the costume will remain part of the show, appearing in next week's episode with a different performance.

But the character's debut song on Saturday was the 1976 hit 'Disco Inferno' by The Trammps, with Red Panda and fellow dancers clad in fire fighter costumes - a theme which could now appear insensitive after the events in Switzerland, Mail Online reports.

An ITV spokesperson said: "In light of the tragic events in Switzerland, we took the decision to remove Red Panda's performance on The Masked Singer owing to potential insensitivities within the theme and lyrics of the song.

"Viewers will get to see Red Panda perform in the coming weeks."

At least 40 people died after a fire broke out in the basement of "Le Constellation", an exclusive venue in Crans-Montana in the heart of the Swiss Alps, at around 1.30am on Thursday morning.

Revellers from all over the world were caught up in the fire, which saw another 119 injured - many of them in their teens and 20s, with severe third degree burns.

Victims include two Swiss females aged 21 and 16, and two Swiss males aged 18 and 16, whose bodies have been returned to their families, according to police. Dozens others remain unaccounted for, including British-educated teenager Charlotte Niddam, who attended immanuel College in Hertfordshire.

Beatrice Pilloud, attorney general for the Valais region, revealed that the bar’s owners Jacques Moretti, 49, and his wife Jessica, 40, have been questioned and could face manslaughter charges.

The Masked Singer launched into its seventh season on ITV on Saturday, with viewers following the performances of two bands led by Goldfish and Emperor Penguin.

Goldfish fronted a band named No Trout and Emperor Penguin was the singer of the Antarctic Funkeys.

Singer Anne-Marie was then unmasked as Goldfish as she performed a cover of Bruno Mars and Rose's hit APT.

The judging panel of Mo Gilligan, Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross and Maya Jama identified the singer as the secret voice behind Goldfish, with Maya quipping: "If Goldfish isn't Anne-Marie hit me with a fish."

After being unmasked, Anne-Marie laughed about her choice of costume, saying: "When I was at school, I had a very short attention span!"

Elsewhere, One Show host Alex Jones was unmasked as the singer behind Disk Jockey, performing a cover of Pink Pony Club by Chappell Roan, and the episode ended in a double elimination.

Alex said: "I have had a lot of fun. We love this programme, as a family, and I just thought, it would be a lot of fun and that to do it for my children would be wonderful."
