ITV Corrie star Alexandra Mardell quits as Emma Brooker faces dramatic exit

Coronation Street star Alexandra Mardell has announced that she's leaving the soap after four years.

Alexandra, whose character made her debut in Weatherfield in 2018, will depart the famous Coronation Street cobbles in April.

Bubbly pink-wearing Emma arrived as an apprentice hairdresser at Audrey Roberts' salon and had a fling with Audrey's grandson David Platt.

And she had no idea that she was working and living on the same street as her biological father Steve McDonald as it emerged that his ex Fiona Middleton was her mum.

At Christmas she went through heartache when her fiance Curtis Delamere, who suffered factitious disorder in which someone deceives others by appearing sick, was wrongly accused of stealing £100,000 meant for a charity in memory of her half brother Oliver Battersby.

She sent him packing on what was meant to be their wedding day only to discover that he had been innocent all along and the money had gone through later due to a technical fault.

And since the new year Emma was involved in another life-changing drama when she and best pal Faye Windass accidentally ran over an elderly man called Ted while she was giving Faye a driving lesson still under the influence of New Year's Eve drinks.

After taking Ted home he later died in his chair leading to an ill-judged cover-up by the girls.

And Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod confirmed the situation will ultimately lead to to Emma's exit.

“Big-hearted Emma has found herself in a massive pickle - one which will ultimately cause her to wave goodbye to the cobbles," said Iain.

"At least for now… Alexandra has been pure Corrie gold since the first moment she lit up the screen in 2018 and I am sure viewers will miss Emma’s sunny, silly sweetness as much as I will.

"She has left a memorable impression on the Street and I wish Alexandra all the best in the next chapter of her career.”

And Alexandra said: “Playing Emma, on the most iconic street there is, has been the best experience of my life.

"Four years have gone so fast.

"Compared to other cast members, I still feel like a newbie, which makes my decision to leave all the more difficult. But I feel it’s the right time for me."

She added: "I can’t thank everyone at Coronation Street enough for welcoming me and trusting me to tell so many wonderful and heartfelt stories.

"And of course for the friendships. When I see pink, I will always think of Emma.”
