ITV Coronation Street writer confirms death of original soap legend

An original Coronation Street cast member had died.

It has been announced by one of the ITV soap's writers that Ernst Walder, who played the role of Ivan Chevesk, died last September, aged 94. He joined the cast on the soap's second ever episode back in 1960.

Former Corrie writer Daran Little shared the sad news on Twitter on Thursday (June 16). The writer, who worked on the ITV soap on and off from 2000 until 2010, paid tribute to the actor.

He said: "Very sad to read of the passing of dearest Ernst Walder. An original C St cast member who quickly became Tony Warren's boyfriends before Tony caught him in bed with another cast member. Ernst used to send my sons chocolates every Christmas and was the loveliest man."

Daran shared an image of the two together as they posed on the cobbled set. Other Twitter users also shared fond memories of the actor as they were saddened to hear of his death.

Lewis said: "Sad to read of the death of Ernst Walder, he played Ivan Cheveski in Coronation Street and was one of the original characters back in 1960. Extremely close to Pat Phoenix, he had so much charisma in those early years. Very sad to read of his passing."

James said: "RIP Ernst. Of course I am now wondering who that cast member was!" Meanwhile, Tony said: "How sad. He was a great character with Linda Tanner. Rip."
