ITV Coronation Street star Tristan Gemmill quits Robert Preston role after four years

Robert Preston will be leaving Coronation Street - after actor Tristan Gemmill revealed he has quit the soap.

Tristan has played Robert for four years on the ITV soap and has been involved with Michelle Connor and Tracy Barlow during his time on the show.

Chef Robert was introduced to the show in 2015 as Tracy Barlow's ex-husband.

Robert has battled testicular cancer during his time on the street, and even had a one night stand with Carla Connor - reports Birmingham Live.

His character is also recovering from a gambling addiction.

He broke the news of his departure on Twitter , writing: "Folks, I just wanted to let you know that the time has come for me to hang up the chef’s gear and head for pastures new.

"There is still a lot of drama & shenanigans to come for Robert but I will be leaving Corrie later in the year."

Earlier this year, Kym Marsh  confirmed she would be exploring other roles, although has not ruled out a possible return in the future.

She said in a statement: “When I was lucky enough to be offered four episodes on Coronation Street I could never in my wildest dreams have thought I’d be here 13 years later.

“It’s been an incredibly difficult decision but it feels like the right time for me to take a break from the show and explore some other roles.

“But this isn’t the last you’ve heard of Michelle Connor, she’ll be back! I can’t wait to see what the writers have in store for the future."
