ITV Coronation Street star puts BBC breakfast host 'in his place' after awkward gaffe

Sally Ann Matthews called out Charlie Stayt after an awkward question during a BBC breakfast interview.

The Coronation Street star was appearing on the red sofa to discuss her role in "Super Soap Week".

She was being quizzed about this week's episodes by Charlie Stayt and Sally Nugent.

However, the interview took an awkward turn when Charlie asked the Corrie veteran : "Did you watch Coronation Street when you were young?"

Sally Ann shot back: "I was in it when I was younger."

Sally Ann played Jenny Bradley in Coronation Street from 1986 to 1991.

The soap star briefly reprised her role in 1993 before returning full-time in 2015.

Charlie Stayt was left red-faced by the question and said: "OK, forget I just said that, will you, please?"

Sally Ann made fun of Charlie's limited knowledge of the show and joked: "You're a big fan, I can tell."

BBC Breakfast viewers on Twitter were left in hysterics after the exchange.

Susan said: "#BBCBreakfast @SallyAnMatthews firmly putting Charlie "I go back years with Coronation Street" firmly in his place. Well done our Jen #Corrie."

Ali added: "Well done @SallyAnMatthews giving Charlie an education in all things #Corrie. I can’t wait for tonight’s episode, it’s going to be epic."

Sandra commented: "Great to see the lovely @SallyAnMatthews on #BBCBreakfast schooling Charlie on all things #Corrie."
