ITV Coronation Street's Tony Maudsley says he's 'hoping and praying' over soap's new arrival as he reveals 'designer' character secret

Coronation Street star Tony Maudsley has revealed what he is 'hoping and praying' for after the soap introduced a new cast member. Fans of the ITV soap quickly fell head over heels earlier this week as they were introduced to cute pooch Freddie as he made his debut in Roy's Rolls.

The four-legged newcomers arrival came as Roy faced a devastating sudden death. The character couldn't quite take in the news that a close friend had passed away, just hours after he met up with and spoke to them. Melvyn sadly lost his life after suffering a medical emergency, with his bereft sister leaving his beloved pet dog Freddie in the care of Roy for the time being.

Melvyn had visited Roy in the café and they planned to go on a day trip together, along with Freddie the dog. But it wasn't long after the pair had set off to visit a bat roost that Roy returned with some worrying news. He revealed to his niece, Nina, and Shona that Melvyn had to be rushed to the hospital.

Cradling Freddie, Roy told the pair that Melvyn had suffered a funny turn and that doctors were running tests but that it wasn't looking good for his pal. Then later, tragedy struck, as Roy had some "distressing news" via a phone call with Melvyn's sister. She informed Roy that Melvyn had died a short time ago, leaving him in complete shock and unable to process the sudden loss of his friend after being with him just hours earlier.

He told Nina: "It's very hard to comprehend. I was only talking to him a matter of hours ago. He seemed fine as far as one can tell of such things," while still caring for Melvyn's beloved pet. But this isn't the last Corrie viewers will see of Freddie as later this week, Roy will find out he has inherited the soap's new adorable dog.

And it appears Tony is keen to get some scenes with Freddie. Tweeting a picture of Roy actor David Neilson and Freddie to Twitter, the George Shuttleworth actor, who joined the soap in 2020, typed: "Hoping and praying I get some scenes with Roy's new dog, Freddie."

Freddie is gorgeous, just like David the yorkie."

@CaroleBignell1 commented: "Omg adorable. Love this new little character." @JV34504144 posted: "Wonderful love it when animals come into Corrie." @unsafealarmgirl shared: "So adorable!!!! What a great addition." While @iankj added: "Bet there’s a right queue to star alongside the new addition to the cobbles."

But it wasn't just about Freddie as one fan was quick to ask Tony about George's latest attire which lead to the 55-year-old actor revealing his character's 'designer' secret. The Corrie viewer asked: "My husband like your cardigan on Corrie last night where did you buy it from?"

To which former Benidorm star Tony replied: "I believe it came from that designer classic boutique - PEACOCKS!!" referring to the high street retailer.
