ITV Coronation Street's Phill star Jamie Kenna surprises fans with accent in 'interesting' message to fans

Phill Whittaker is having a bit of a disastrous time on the cobbles right now after he was jilted by Fiz Stape in Coronation Street. The character, played by Jamie Kenna, started out as Fiz's knight in shining armour after her shock split from Tyrone Dobbs following his affair with their lodger, Alina Pop.

But months down the line, the Underworld machinist appeared unable to hide her true feelings any longer and left Phill to go back to Tyrone - but not before marrying him. Fiz has been dubbed cruel by viewers of the ITV soap after she only decide to ditch Phill after they said 'I Do' at their wedding reception.

And despite the days having passed by, he still has no idea that she's back in the arms of her ex Tyrone. After a romantic meal with a mariachi band failed to win Fiz over, Phill took a different direction during Wednesday night's (July 13) trip to Weatherfield. Fiz was left red-faced when he arrived outside Underworld factory with a boombox blaring out the love song In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel, copying the trench coat-wearing John Cusack in the classic rom-com Say Anything.

Donning an eighties-style quiffed hairdo, he soon switched the music to play Silent Night as he paid homage to the famous scene from the Christmas film Love Actually. In the classic film Mark, played by Andrew Lincoln, declares his unrequited love for Keira Knightley's character Juliet by holding up a series of cards.

Phill, however, attempted to hold up cards containing the words of Fiz’s favourite love songs. He tried to get Kirth Sutherland, played by Andy Whyment, but to the amusement of the factory staff - but the embarrassment of Fiz - Phill got the cards badly muddled up, accidentally telling her "I love your wind."

And fans were quickly flocking to social media in a plea 'make it stop' following the 'cringeworthy' and 'painful' scene. Prior to his latest scenes Jamie, who joined the Salford-based soap as Phill last year, took to Instagram to share a video message with fans after only just catching up on all of his character's wedding drama.

Phill has been trying to win back Fiz in Coronation Street (ITV)

"Good morning everyone. I hope you're all well," he began to say in the video filmed outside. "I'm just sitting in the garden having a cup of coffee after my gym session, or am i just dressed in my gym kit having a cup of coffee and i'm not going to bother going to the gym, I guess you'll never know, anyway..."

He went on: "I just want to jump on here because I've finally had the chance to catch up on all the wedding stuff because I was away so I binge-watched it last night and I just wanted to say a massive, massive thank you to everyone." Jamie continued: "I've had so many message and so many people have been supportive, so many people feeling sorry for Phill and saying he's a bit hard done by and I genuinely feel moved and touched by that.

"I thought everyone would be like 'thank goodness for that, Tyrone and Fiz are back together' so I was really moved and touched by all your comments and don't think that us as the actors don't get effected by that. We love feedback so just wanted to thank you all and say to keep watching because it gets very interesting."

Captioning the clip, Jamie wrote: "Thank you from Phill!! @coronationstreet.." Lisa George, whose character Beth Sutherland was in attendance at the doomed wedding, wrote: "It was great!!!!!!" While Harriet Bibby, who plays Summer Spellman in the ITV soap, commented with applause emojis to show her support.

But Corrie fans were left a little distracted. @jb.freddie62 commented: "It’s been amazing. Surprised at your accent ! Well done on such a good storyline." @julieannhobo wrote: "Awww you are so lovely, didn't expect the accent." @becky_waters5 shared her surprise, writing: "OMG you’re a southerner! Great accent."

Others were also praising Jamie for his portrayal of Phill and made it clear they want him to stick around in Weatherfield. @barbarawoodward11 wrote: "Hope it's not the end of you being in Corrie." @edmondson_helen said: "Hope you’re around for a long long time. Love watching you on Corrie (still really impressed by your northern accent)."

@stephen_mcnamara_67 commented: "You've been great. I hope you stick around on Corrie." @vamorris91 replied: "Phill is lovely, I hope he sticks around! #TeamPhill." @ktwetone added: "Team Phil all the way! Looking forward to what’s coming up next."
