ITV Coronation Street's Millie Gibson reveals special nod to Kelly viewers may miss during exit and souvenir she has taken from set

Millie Gibson has admitted to being a 'wreck' as she spoke about her final days on the cobbles. The actress has played Kelly Neelan in Coronation Street for three years but will bow out of the ITV soap in dramatic scenes set to air during a special 'Super Soap Week' this month.

Her exit from the soap was rumoured last month and was eventually confirmed by the soap's boss Iain MacLeod when he spoke to the Manchester Evening News and other press about what is to come this September, and autumn, in Weatherfield. And because Millie has made the decision to leave, Corrie hasn't held back on her exit.

"We thought the fact that Millie is going and therefore Kelly’s going allows us to go really big and do something incredibly high stakes and to get these characters to stand on these landmines with buried for them over the years and will go off in one cataclysmic explosion,” Iain revealed to us.

Speaking about what happens to Kelly when she finds out the truth from Sharon, her dad's former sidekick at the loan shark's office, Millie said: "She doesn't know what to do with herself and you eventually see this cold… almost like her dad’s coming into her personality. You sort of see her starting to turn into Rick Neelan in that sense and it’s a completely new personality for her. It’s really bad."

And it was very emotional for Millie to film, alongside Mikey North who plays Gary. "I’ve been a wreck,” the 18-year-old from Broadbottom, said of filming her final scenes. “There was a good two weeks where I was crying constantly because I think I was just so overwhelmed and so grateful over the scenes and the storyline that had been given to me but there was a specific scene that stick out to me…"

She explained: "Throughout mine and Gary’s relationship, we’ve never hugged. We’ve always spoken like, ‘why have you never hugged me when I’m breaking down in a basement. But there’s a scene where Gary hugs Kelly, it’s a really simple scene but when we did it and shot it I just burst out crying. I’m getting choked up now.

And speaking to the Manchester Evening News and other press about her exit, Millie explained how she included a special nod to her character in her final scenes - that what souvenir she took from the Salford-based set home with her.

Kelly's coat has made it to the end (ITV)

"I’m going to take Kelly’s puffer coat, the massive fur coat that’s the most ridiculous coat ever," she said. It looks like a bin bag – that black bin-bag coat with fur on the hood, she wears it all the time in winter and every time it’s summer I think, 'God, I miss that coat!'

"I feel like her when I’m wearing it so I’m going to take that for sure." Millie then added: "This is a bit of a spoiler but I made sure that in my last scene I was wearing that coat."
