ITV Coronation Street's Lisa George to show hidden singing talent after being 'sacked' from show and left homeless

Coronation Street star Lisa George is finally going to show viewers her hidden talent this weekend. Viewers will best know the actress for playing Beth Sutherland in the ITV soap.

But on Sunday night (April 3), Lisa is swapping the cobbles of Weatherfield for the bright lights of the stage when fans will get to see her transform for ITV's All Star Musicals.

The show sees the celebrities embark on the ultimate musical theatre masterclass and hope to be voted All Star Musical's champion with their spectacular performance. The latest batch of famous faces will be equipped with world-class mentoring from musical theatre superstars Elaine Paige OBE, Samantha Barks and Trevor Dion Nicholas before being supported by a full West End ensemble and a live orchestra for their big performance.

And a set of first-look pictures released last week of Lisa's transformation rendered her unrecognisable as she ditched her Corrie character's trademark blonde locks and 80s-inspired look for a cropped black wig and kimono-style gown as she channelled Sally Bowles, the role made famous by Hollywood icon Liza Minnelli, in Cabaret.

Ahead of her appearance on the programme, Lisa spoke to Ranvir Singh on ITV's Lorraine on Friday (April 1) where she revealed that singing was one of her first loves, but her confidence was knocked during her early years and was even sacked from a job as they told her she 'couldn't sing'.

She explained that she’d been singing throughout her childhood and teens in school and church choirs before winning a signing scholarship at drama school.

"I always wanted to go into musical theatre, I’ve done festivals and started winning, and thought 'Oh yeah, maybe I can,'" to 49-year-old soap star told Ranvir, who is filling in for Lorraine Kelly on her self-titled show.

"I'd just finished off tour and I was in this show, a new show which was at Blackpool with a few stars and everything, and they sacked me and said I couldn’t sing," Lisa explained to a shocked Ranvir who said: "You are joking!?"

"I'm not," Lisa laughed. "I lost the money, I was homeless, I had to go back to my mum and dad’s and I didn’t open my mouth. I didn’t sing. I was absolutely crushed," which lead the presenter to reply: "What an awful, awful thing."

But Lisa will finally get to show off her singing talents when All Star Musicals hits screens. Joining Lisa in the line-up for the show, hosted by John Barrowman, is ITV News and Good Morning Britain's Alex Beresford, former EastEnders actress and I'm A Celebrity winner Jacqueline Jossa, wildlife presenter Michaela Strachan, James Bond actor Colin Salmon, and rugby star Danny Care.

And Ranvir revealed that Lisa made someone in the crew cry during rehearsals for the programme. "I know," Lisa said with a wry smile while also looking slightly taken aback by the moment herself. "I think she was the director and everyone was watching and they gave me a standing ovation and clapped.

"She just came over and said thanks so much for being part of the show, you've really made me cry. It was so emotional," Lisa said.

All Star Musicals airs April 3 at 7:30pm on ITV and ITV Hub
