ITV Coronation Street's Beverley Callard to leave show 'with a bang' after 30 years

Corrie favourite Beverley Callard is set to leave the ITV soap after 30 years.

Beverley has played Liz McDonald on Coronation Street for three decades and will exit the soap 'with a bang'.

Speaking to OK! Magazine the 62-year-old confirmed her departure and said there is a huge storyline coming with her final scenes playing out in 2020.

She said: "I was in shock, I felt totally numb".

She added she had experienced "so many sleepless nights" over her decision, but knew she was making the right choice.

Beverley added: "I’ve been told Liz is going to go with one hell of a bang. I cant wait!"

Beverley, who first appeared on the soap in 1989, will soon go on tour with the comedy The Thunder Girls.

She joined the theatre show based on the best-selling novel alongside Coleen Nolan and Emmerdale's Sandra Marvin earlier this year.

Beverley also spoke of her frustrations over the lack of roles for older women when discussing her decision to leave the soap.

She said: "There’s very little work in our industry for women over 50, but I’m 62 and recently I was doing three jobs at once.

"It made me realise how I was privileged to have the opportunity to do so when so many women my age no longer get the chance."

She added: "I’m sick of ageism in the industry.

"Although I’ve had to leave the safety net of being in Coronation Street to do this, I’m hoping that ageist bosses, of which there are many, take note of how successful this show is and it starts the ball rolling on helping other women my age, get the roles they still deserve."

*Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30pm and 8:30pm on ITV
