ITV Coronation Street fans slam 'below the belt' scene with Nina and Abi

Coronation Street fans slammed Abi Franklin's "spiteful outburst" towards fellow character Nina Lucas

Nina, played by Mollie Gallagher, was released from hospital after being beaten up alongside her boyfriend Seb Franklin, played by Harry Visinoni - who died after the attack.

His mum Abi, played by Sally Carman, in her grief and looking to blame someone for the death of her son cornered Nina and told her it was her fault Seb was dead because she dressed like a goth.

She said it was because of her and her "stupid clothes" and because she was a "freak" that Seb was attacked and killed.

Abi said: "If you were normal he wouldn't be lying in a morgue so it is just as much your fault as anyone else's.

"You're nothing special, you ain't wise, you ain't woke, you're a weirdo."

Viewers were quick to condemn Abi's words, saying her grief as a mum was no excuse, and boarded on victim-blaming.

@RyanGlendennin7 said: "Now I know you are grieving Abi however that spiteful outburst at Nina was so vile and totally uncalled for. Nina is as much as a victim as Seb was.

"What happened to Seb was horrible yet Abi cannot blame Nina it was just wrong place at the wrong time."

@rubyrache said: "Abi, it wasn't Nina's fault Seb died. FfS. She's entitled to wear what she wants."

@lynger2000 said: "I know Abi is hurting & lashing out but that was uncalled for, Nina did not deserve that!!"

@DaveNebula said: "It's just as well Abi has the excuse of being in an extreme state of grief because that is bang out of order."

@JLROnIceUK said: "That's NOT fair, @ITVCorrie! Abby couldn't of said that. Her appearance has got NOTHING to do with it. That's below the belt, Coronation Street!"

*Coronation Street is on ITV1 Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and available on ITV Player
