ITV Coronation Street fans in bits as 'true icon' Eccles the dog dies

Coronation Street fans were left feeling emotional tonight after the death of a much-loved character.

Eccles the dog sadly died after vets discovered a tumour which had spread to her other organs.

The Border Terrier has been the long time companion of Ken Barlow, the only character to have been on the soap since it first began 60 years ago.

His former mother-in-law Blanche left Eccles to Ken when she died in 2010.

Since Ken left the famous cobbles for a retirement home, he had to leave beloved Eccles behind as dogs are not permitted at the swanky residence.

Steve's daughter Emma had been caring for the elderly dog and after noticing she wasn't her usual self, she took her to the vet who confirmed the worst.

Viewers were devastated to discover Eccles was put down.

Ken arrived at the vets and learned of the heartbreaking news after spotting Emma in tears.

He said: "I should've been here."

His daughter Tracy blamed Emma for the devastating loss.

On Twitter, fan Liv said: "RIP Eccles, a true Coronation Street icon".

Another viewer said: "Poor Eccles. F*** off Tracy you old hag. Emma did her best.

"And why wasn't Steve more supportive of her? She's upset. Crap useless father."

Pritha commented: "Awww, poor Emma! Poor Eccles!"

Jamie added: "With all the misery in the world already, are you really going to kill off a dog?"

Another viewer said: "ECCLES?! NOOO".

Andy said: "Tracy immediately blames Emma. Brilliant."

*Coronation Street will continue on ITV at 7.30pm on Friday
