ITV Coronation Street fans heartbroken as soap 'legend' dies

Coronation Street fans were left gutted on Monday night as the soap confirmed a "legend" had died.

Kevin and Debbie Webster's dad Bill Webster died off screen, as he was said to be living in Germany in recent years. The soap's most recent episode saw Debbie return from the European nation where she had been visiting her dad with Kevin.

Viewers saw her and Abi discussing her dad's final days as Abi said: "Kev said it was peaceful".

Debbie said: "I’m going to go out and help with the arrangements and stuff. I should’ve stayed out there", as Abi replied: "You weren't to know".

Fans rushed to social media after hearing the sad news. Mitchell said: "RIP Bill I know the actor Peter Armitage died back in 2018 but still sad news shame they could y get everyone back for an on screen funeral though".

@ConversationStr said: "Aww Corrie confirmed the death of Bill Webster, Kevin and Debbie's dad, played by Peter Armitage who died in 2018". Ashley said: "Bill was a legend, would have liked to have seen a bit more made of his passing".

Bill actor Peter Armitage died in 2018. Charlie Lawson, who plays Jim McDonald, shared the sad news on Twitter at the time, Birmingham Live reports.

He said: "It’s with great sadness, that I’ve to tell you my great old friend Pete Armitage has died. RIP mate". Simon Gregson, who plays Charlie's on-screen son, echoed his thoughts, adding: "I loved Pete what a lovely man very sad RIP lovely man."

Leanne Battersby actress Jane Danson added, "So sorry to hear this, lovely man . Thoughts to family and friends."

Peter first took on the role of Kevin Webster's dad for a six-month stint in 1984. He then returned to the ITV soap between 1995 and 1997, and did a third stint from 2006 to 2011.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV and ITVX
