ITV Britain's Got Talent fans work out Phantom's identity after confusion left them agreeing with Simon Cowell

A week of Britain's Got Talent live shows is almost over and the penultimate show caused all kinds of drama, specifically around Simon Cowell and one act in particular. The 63-year-old was back on the judging panel for the fourth of five semi-final shows as several more acts took to the stage to try impress Simon, Alesha Dixon, David Walliams, and Amanda Holden as well as viewers in a bid to make it through to the BGT final on Sunday (June 5).

Among those hoping to make it to the last stage were Mary P, comedian and impressionist Stefano Paulino, singing keyworkers The Frontline Singers, panto group Dame Nation and Titan the Robot. But it was anonymous magician The Phantom that got most talking.

The act saw the Phantom ask David to write down a memory on a piece of paper while remembering the specific time he believed it would happen. The unknown figure that got Amanda involved, asking her to head up to the stage and told to stand on an X next to a desk where papers blew across it.

Things got slightly weirder when Amanda to step into something he'd 'been working on' which appeared to be a box at one side of the stage. Amanda was helped into the lit-up box by a crew member as The Phantom invited her to step into 'his world' of being invisible.

The 51-year-old then 'disappeared' although was apparently moving around on stage alongside the Phantom who then asked David Walliams to come up onto the stage where he was asked to put his note with his memory on into a box and the time he was thinking of was uncovered on a clock that was already in place on stage.

Soon, the comedian and children's writer was stood in front of a mirror where Amanda suddenly appeared in his reflection and guessed what it was that David had written on the paper. He was then sent back to the judging panel and Amanda also made her return before the act came to an end.

However, Simon told everyone watching that he didn't get it and asked what David's memory had to do with it. David tried to defend The Phantom by confirming Amanda did guess what he had written down right. But Simon was still baffled as to why this wasn't a part of the act's reveal.

Simon felt it was 'pointless' and continued to ask what had happened while David took aim at the show's boss and quipped: "The nurses will be around in a minute!" Despite disagreeing with him earlier in the week, many BGT viewers ended up on Simon's side.

@fifecitizen tweeted: "Phantom messed up that act big time. Simon was right, it was never explained at the end. #bgt #BritainsGotTalent." @NathanOCarroll said: "The phantom act made no sense there were loads of things left unfinished! I must be thick too so #bgt."

@1969_lfc commented: "#BGT what the hell was that phantom crap about. I'm with Simon what was the point of the cubs story thing and the 2 papers." @gilmourstott shared: "The Phantom was awful I totally agree with Simon cowell nothing was explained properly. #BGT."

Marc Spellman has been on the show twice before (ITV)

Despite the confusion with the act, many BGT viewers think they have sussed out its identity. @ciarale01 said: "The Phantom is definitely Marc Spellman, who returned a couple year later as Magician X. I'm 100% sure of it #BGT #BritainsGotTalent."

@BernieClugston tweeted: "Anyone else think The Phantom is Marc Spellman aka X #BGT." @shinypinkachu echoed: "'X marks the spot' okay yeah. The Phantom is 100% Marc Spellman. I’m all for it. #BGT." @tinton_hermione shared: "I love the phantom and i really think it is marc spellman because it keeps relating to x #BGT."

Marc Spellman received Ant & Dec's golden buzzer during the 2018 series and the secretly returned to the show in 2019 under the guise of Magician X.
