ITV bosses set sights on Pop Idol revival as series celebrates 21st birthday

ITV bosses have reportedly set their sights on reviving hit talent show Pop Idol.

They are planning a TV special this year to mark 21-years since the iconic reality TV first aired.

If it turns out that the special episode goes down a hit with ITV fans, Pop Idol bosses will 'consider relaunching' the series which catapulted the likes of Will Young, Gareth Gates, and Michelle McManus to international fame and fortune.

Lifting the lid on the show's possible return, an insider told that bringing back the series is a 'no-brainer' - especially due to the fact Big Brother is making an epic comeback next year.

"With Gladiators and Big Brother returning, it is a no-brainer to bring back another hit," a source told Daily Star.

Pop Idol launched on ITV back in 2001 and it became an instant smash with viewers.

Fans tuned in religiously to watch the hopefuls try to impress judges stern Simon Cowell, Pete Waterman, Dr Neil Fox and Nicki Chapman.

The first series, which was won by Will Young, also catapulted the music career of singer Gareth Gates.

Despite the show's popularity, ITV would soon ditch the format in favour of The X Factor which ran on the channel from 2004 until 2018.

However, plans are under way to make a Pop Idol reunion special due to air later this year.

The show will reunite some of the judges and singers to discuss their memories.
