ITV apologise after Anne-Marie flag scandal on Saturday Night Takeaway and re-edit show

Saturday Night Takeaway bosses have issued an apology after Anne-Marie's performance on the programme sparked fury at the weekend.

The Brit Award nominee was the guest act for Saturday night's second episode of the new series but, just like Pussycat Dolls' performance a week earlier, her star turn prompted complaints.

And it was all down to what Ant and Dec were wearing. The Geordie presenters wore bandannas with an image resembling the controversial "Rising Sun" Japanese flag, which was flown during Japan's imperialist expansion when it occupied Korea and part of China in the 19th Century.

During the Second World War, it was a symbol of the navy which garnered a controversial reputation as Japanese troops carried out atrocities on local people while occupying Asia.

After some of her followers lashed out at the Ciao Adios singer on Twitter, Anne-Marie apologised, writing: " "I sincerely apologise to all those who were affected and hurt by my appearance last night on a UK TV.

"I want you to know that I had nothing to do with the costumes on this sketch. Unfortunately education on this part of the history wasn't done and I am also hurt by the pain this signifies for so many people.

"I am truly sorry and I promise you that this will not happen again. Our team is talking to the TV station, working on taking down the footage so that it does not cause any more pain."

And now ITV have too made an apology. A statement from the channel read: "We apologise for any offence caused during the End of the Show Show by the costumes worn," ITV said in a statement.

"This was clearly unintended and we have taken steps to re-edit that part of the episode for the Hub and for repeat broadcasts."
